LiOn: Linguistics Online

The aim of this project was to create an on-line exercise component for beginning linguistics students, in the form of an e-book.

I was hired for this project for only a very short time in 2006, by Paola Monachesi of Utrecht University. The project was a continuation of an earlier project named Eboli, which also sought to start the creation of an e-book for first year Linguistic students at Utrecht University, but didn't yield much practical result.

The exercises should be seen as the ones that are typically to be found in workgroups. In recent years however these workgroups have been mostly replaced by computer practice, leaving no room for students to practise their skills. Therefore these exercises should allow students to test the knowledge they have gained from the theoretical part of the e-book in an easy and intuitive manner. This means that no programming skills should be necessary to complete the exercises, nor should students be required to leave the environment of the book.

Due to the limited time, our focus was on quickly developing some useful technologies and showing some practical examples. I was the programmer and webdesigner for this project, and I collaborated with Rogier Kraf and Jantine Trapman, who were in charge of the actual linguistic content and concept.

I would hope to someday continue to work on this or a similar project, as I still think there is ample room for improvement.
